Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How are the classes conducted?

Live, Teacher-Led Classes
All classes are conducted live via Zoom, allowing students to interact directly with certified teachers and classmates from around the world. This hands-on approach ensures that students receive immediate feedback and guidance in each session, keeping them engaged and on track under the direction of an experienced instructor.

How long are the classes, and how often do they meet?

Each class is approximately 60 minutes long and meets once per week. The writing program runs for a total of 24 classes, allowing students ample time to develop strong foundational writing skills. While classes are consecutive, we do skip major holidays to accommodate family schedules. All sessions follow Eastern Standard Time (EST), so students in different time zones should adjust accordingly.

What kind of homework can my child expect?

Homework is assigned with every class and is due the day before the next session. We start with smaller tasks (single paragraphs) to build confidence, gradually increasing the workload as we progress (multiple paragraphs). While the time spent on each assignment varies by child, the tasks are designed to be manageable and help develop writing endurance throughout the program.

What kind of feedback will my child receive?

Your child will receive in-depth, personalized feedback on every assignment. This feedback includes suggestions, edits, and questions aimed at helping them see different perspectives on their writing. Our goal is to guide students toward improving their skills by showing them how their work could be enhanced or refined. Feedback is not just about correcting mistakes, but about offering new ideas and ways to think about their writing.

Assignments will be returned within one to two weeks after submission. Please note that late assignments will not be reviewed, so it’s important to submit work on time to ensure timely feedback.

What materials will my child need?

Your child will need a student workbook, which is listed in the class description but is not included in the tuition. This workbook is required for completing assignments and following along with the lessons. In addition, students will need lined paper, blank paper, pens, and pencils for note-taking and assignments.

What if my child misses a class due to sickness or holiday?

If your child misses a class, no problem! All sessions are recorded and securely stored for 15 days. You can request the class recording for your child to view at their convenience. After 15 days, recordings are deleted for privacy reasons.

How does this program fit into my child’s current school curriculum?

The program is designed to complement and enhance the writing skills your child is learning in school. The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) method aligns with both U.S. and Canadian educational standards by focusing on core skills like structured writing, grammar, and critical thinking. These are essential across various subjects and grade levels.

In the U.K. and European educational systems, IEW’s emphasis on clear communication, essay structure, and creative writing fits seamlessly into the academic expectations, helping students improve their performance in English and other writing-intensive subjects.

What are the benefits of the IEW program for my child?

The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) program helps students develop a strong foundation in writing by teaching them how to structure their ideas clearly and creatively. With a focus on key skills like organization, grammar, and style, students gain confidence and proficiency in writing across various subjects. Our approach also strengthens critical thinking and communication, which are essential for success not only in school but in future academic and professional settings.

By the end of the program, your child will have improved their writing abilities, gained a deeper understanding of how to communicate ideas effectively, and developed writing habits that will support them throughout their academic journey.

What leads to student success?

Student success is a team effort between the teacher, student, and parents. We create an environment for success in the classroom and through Google Classroom, but continued effort at home is essential. If students follow instructions, complete assignments as directed, and actively engage in the process, they will see steady improvement—there’s no going backward. Parents are invited to ask questions and seek support from the instructor via email or through Google Classroom as needed.

What happens after my child completes the program?

Upon completing the program, your child will have developed stronger foundational writing skills and gained confidence in their abilities. To keep the momentum going, students are invited to continue with a next-level writing program or explore a theme-based program to further enhance their skills. This ensures they can continue building on the progress they've made.

How much do live classes cost?

The cost of live classes is $800 CAD, $600 USD, or £550 GBP for the entire 24-class program. This price includes access to all live sessions, and personalized feedback on assignments. Student workbooks are not included in the tuition.

What if the program isn’t the right fit for our child? Can we get a refund?

Tuition for live classes is non-refundable, but we encourage you to stick with the full 24-class program. Sometimes, the breakthrough moment can happen in the next session, and we’re committed to helping your child succeed. If you purchased materials from IEW, they offer a 100% money-back guarantee on product purchases. Give it a try—great progress can be just around the corner!

What happens when I enroll siblings?

If siblings are in the same class, each child will need their own student book, computer, and a private space to work in, away from their sibling, to ensure focused participation. We also offer sibling discounts to help make it more affordable for families with multiple children enrolled.
